If you’re new to the world of massage therapy, you may be asking yourself what an Ashiatsu massage is. It’s a massage treatment that’s been around for centuries and is often said to be one of the deepest massages. In this article, we’ll discuss what an Ashiatsu massage is, what it is good for, and what it is used to treat.

Ashiatsu massage defined

In Japanese, “ashi” translates to foot, and “atsu” means pressure. Ashiatsu is a barefoot massage technique where therapists deliver deep, consistent pressure while utilizing their feet and body weight. They work with gravity instead of against it to help heal troubled areas, such as where you are sore.

Ashiatsu massages are done by trained therapists for a reason. Experienced massage therapists can provide an effective massage without causing pain or discomfort to their clients because they’ve had the necessary training and experience. Tonya has taken several Ashiatsu training courses and has been practicing it since 2010.

What is Ashiatsu massage good for?

There are many benefits of getting an Ashiatsu massage. These include:

  • Reducing chronic pain and aches. Ashiatsu massage is a deep-tissue massage that uses the therapist’s feet. This means that deeper layers of soft tissue are loosened, which helps reduce chronic pain. It helps flush out the inflammation that causes pain.
  • Leaves little to no discomfort. Ashiatsu massage differs from traditional deep-tissue massage because it leaves little residual soreness. The application of the foot allows for more generalized dispersed pressure that is deep and relaxing.
  • Increases flexibility and circulation. The feet play a significant role in Ashiatsu massage because they pinpoint deep tissues, and therapists can use gravity to their advantage. The gravity-assisted strokes allow the body to broaden and lengthen muscle fibers, creating more flexibility. Body tissue is also stretched in two different ways, helping scar tissues and adhesions recover, allowing for increased circulation and flexibility.
  • Improves posture and decreases pain. After a few treatments, Ashiatsu has been known to improve posture and range of motion. It’s known to reduce and eliminate chronic muscle pain and improve bodily functions, providing a greater sense of balance.
  • Decreases stress and tension. Massage therapy can help your body let go of stress. However, according to massage clients, no other massage application has been as thorough as Ashiatsu. The techniques used help reduce cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone. Positive effects of this include a lowered heart rate, decreased tension, and improved mental health. Why should you only see a professional Ashiatsu massage therapist?

It’s no secret that most massage therapists have training when it comes to traditional deep-tissue massage that involves using hands and elbows. However, Ashiatsu deep-tissue massages use the therapist’s feet to apply pressure. You should only see a professional who has trained in Ashiatsu for your safety. If you see a therapist who hasn’t been trained, you’re risking a potential injury. This is because you can’t just have someone walk on your back or use their feet without knowing where to place them.
