What it is

Mindfulness is a mental practice that involves maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment. It is characterized by acceptance — meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad. Mindfulness involves tuning in to the present moment, rather than dwelling on the past or anticipating the future. It often includes mindfulness meditation, where one focuses on breathing or another anchor of present-moment awareness, allowing thoughts and feelings to pass without attachment. The practice stems from Buddhist traditions but has been widely adopted in secular contexts for its mental health benefits.

What it is not

Mindfulness is not about emptying the mind or achieving a state of eternal calm. It is not a religious practice, though it has spiritual roots, and it does not require any specific beliefs or rituals. Mindfulness is not a quick fix for deep-seated psychological issues, and it's not about disengaging from the world or one's responsibilities. It does not mean one will no longer experience negative thoughts or emotions; rather, it's about observing these experiences without judgment and understanding them more clearly.

Why it is beneficial

The practice of mindfulness has been associated with a variety of mental and physical health benefits. Regular mindfulness practice can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression by helping individuals to become more aware of their thoughts and feelings and to respond to them in a non-reactive way. It can improve focus and concentration, enhance cognitive flexibility, and support better decision-making. Mindfulness can also contribute to physical health by lowering blood pressure, reducing chronic pain, and improving sleep. Additionally, it can improve emotional regulation and increase resilience, enabling a more adaptive response to daily stressors. For many, mindfulness fosters a greater sense of peace, connectedness, and overall well-being.
